Vedic Astrology: Michael Shermer vs Jeffrey Armstrong
In a scenario set up to debunk astrology, Jeffrey Armstrong completely outshines Michael Shermer in a way that any scientist should say is “statistically interesting.”
The SCENARIO: Jeffrey reads NINE charts in about TWENTY minutes. Most charts are usually given an hour of study each. EXPERIMENT I: face-to-face reading with a skeptic. The subject, afterwards, said Jeffrey’s reading “officially blew me away.” EXPERIMENT II: Nine “blind” readings. Results: 105 of 137—or 77%—of Jeffrey’s statements deemed accurate, ALL scores 63% or over, high of 89%. EXPERIMENT III: The kicker. Two of the nine, unbeknownst to Jeffrey or the subjects, have their charts switched. Accuracy rating drops to 38 and 21% respectively. Switched back to true charts, accuracy goes to 94 and 92%.

No scientist would …
No scientist would consider this remotely statistically significant. It is anecdotal.

Cold reading, vague …
Cold reading, vague statements, tiny sample sizes and no real control group are… serious business!!!

Has this individual …
Has this individual been tested further? Has he repeated these results? If so, then this is very interesting. Test, test, test. Science is not a position, it’s a method. Being skeptical is not the same as being cynical. I would gladly change my position on psychics, astrology and the like, so long as there was sufficient evidence to do so.

An accuracy rating …
An accuracy rating of 77% is a credible number and is more than just a guess.
In the betting world, if you gathered information on a team and it turned out that a certain team wins against another team 77% of the time, the bet would be deemed as a credible bet.
In the betting world any situation where a team has a better than 66% chance of winning that game, through extensive research, is a virtual lock.

astrology isn’t a government. a government makes a society. so you know.
astrology can’t end world hunger, or poverty.

I agree, Gandhi …
I agree, Gandhi actually dragged India down few centuries instead of leading her to a future of Critical thinking. Gandhi was a religious fanatic Hindu and a racist who hated the black people in Sout Africa. In fact ‘money was spent to maintain Gandhi’s poverty’, can’t remember who said that, but a famous Indian who was Gandhi’s contemporary.

My country has …
My country has already been raped and robbed by the British. What’s more, the country my family came from has also been raped and robbed by the same crowd. Yet both counties have first world economies and happy productive people!
How did that happen?
Chiefly because we know education and hard work lead to success, not some silly backwards bullshit *primitive* belief in astrology!
Furthermore Gandhi was a racist opportunist who gets far more credit than he deserves.
Why’d you bring him up?

The statements he is calling out could (and do!) apply to anyone to some degree.
Colour me unimpressed.

Also, several …
Also, several people have said that the first “hit” Armstrong gets couldn’t have been a guess, because most people don’t do martial arts. But Armstrong said “martial arts or dancing,” and Jennifer hears “martial arts.” If she had never done martial arts (not even a kickboxing class at the gym?), he could fall back on the more general “dancing” guess. Most people have danced at some point, at least when they were a kid. Does anyone else spend a lot of time in a blue toyota or an older car?

@mysticbrightshadow …
@mysticbrightshadow: If vedic astrology has been around for 7,000 years, as you claim, have the “experts” updated their charts recently? The stars are in significantly different positions than 7k years ago…

Ah but a skeptic …
Ah but a skeptic naturally doesn’t believe in anything. Your probably skeptical of all spirituality too. You are therefor a bad example and certainly not the norm, especially for an Indian.

1 Cold Reading.
2 …
1 Cold Reading.
2 Staying in general undefined linguistic terms plus to be a true double blind test Shermer as well would need to be unaware of which statement goes with which person. After revealing the flip-flop of course the test subjects are predisposed.
What you call “experiment 3″ is in fact is statistically not significant since there are only two persons considered.
The poster of course took this out of context and the real analysis by Shermer of what really happened is sure to follow!
